Our journey to Zanzibar was... unespected! Sit down and read our story!
It all started the 22nd of January of 2018. We were at home about to head out to the airport to catch a flight to Johannesburg, SouthAfrica when we received a mail telling us that our flight to London had been cancelled. This meant our first flight was cancelled and therefore all the rest too. We were shocked and immediately ran to the airport ti try to fix things.
In the meantime we called the organizer (Exoticca) to try to fix things but they kept telling us that this was our fault. AND WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! In addition, when we got to the airport nobody seemed to try to fix the mess... Finally we managed to ask for a customer denunciation form and got all of our money back. AMAZING!
At this point you have to imagine us. After three hours of complaining we got the money back but, we were still in the airport, with the luggage and spirits but... with NO TRAVEL. Suddently my mum decided to go to the plane panel and see what flights were going out in Barcelona that day. There were a lot of regular flights but, one caught out our attention: Sao Paulo. We immediately sat down and checked for flights and the weather. RAIN??? Really? We looked up some other places like Argentina, Mauricio Islands, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Cuba, Rio de Janeiro, Raja Ampat.... but in all of those placed the weather forecast was RAIN! We were desperate!
Finally a girl in front of us told us to look for Zanzibar and we thought it couldn't hurt so... we tried! The plane tickets weren't very expensive and the weather forecast was SUN! Amazing! In a matter of minutes we had the plane tickets in our hands and an airbnb house for the 7 days of the trip. (
PLANE:
BARCELONA --- DUBAI (4H WAITING) --- ZANZIBAR
After 17h or so of being on a plane we finally arrived to Zanzibar! The views from the plane were amazing and we couldn't wait to explore the island.
ZANZIBAR:
We landed on time and went straight to the Terminal (Little house). There we had to buy our VISA to enter the country (50$) and filled up some papers. Then we passed security control with many other tourists and finally we got our luggage. (You could see the luggage from the security control. The suitcases were all on the floor.). To sum up... the airport was kind of small but cute!
We also changed some money. They work with TZS! (You have to divide by 2200 to get the amount of dollars)
What caught our attention was the car rental. It was literally a wooden desk with a paper sign that said "Car rental". There we asked for a car and immediately 6 guys appeared and talked to us. They were all from the same company. At the beginning we were a little scared but... they didn't mean any harm. (Remember we hadn't planned a thing cause we decided at the airport so... we didn't have time to read about Zanzibar!). So 6 guys carried our luggage to a car. We hopped on the car and realized that they drove on the other side! (they drive like in the UK, on the right). Then the man drove us to a street were they had a car for us. (TOYOTA ESCUDO). 8 more men cleaned the car and finally gave it to us. We asked for the contract and they said "Don't worry I trust you!" and my father said "NO, BUT I DON'T TRUST YOU! jajaj". We ended up with no contract but... I mean we were the ones with the car so... They told us one last thing "Be careful. People here drive like crazy. Watch out for chicken, people crossing the streets, caws and goats". And we said... "okey... jeje". But they forgot a lot of information that we will tell in another post.
Off we go! We put in the map the address of the villa we had rented (Grand Beach Villa) out and drove. It all started very well. We got to see the real Africa, the school, the university... but... we couldn't find the house. After a lot of tries we called the man of the house and, after a lot of waiting and getting lost we finally found out way to the house! (We landed about 16:00 and we got to the house at 18:00). (Tip*: If you rent the Grand Beach Villa take note that the adress is probably wrong. Call the guy upon landing)
To our surprise when we got to the house we met all of the staff and security. They gave us a tour and finally, they prepared us a sea food dinner. Umm delicious!
